Food Scientist

This full-time position works under the direction of the R&D Director. The ideal candidate is highly motivated and energetic, and seeking an opportunity to join a company that believes in community and social responsibility. Individuals who are able to adapt to a start-up work environment, have strong communication skills and work ethics feature high on our list.

This person will be part of a growing team that is responsible for developing and commercializing new and improved dairy-alternative products in the rapidly emerging plant-based food space, as well as improving current processes. This position works under and reports to the Director of R&D and the CEO.  All aspects of product development, including benchtop models, process development, scaling, modifying or improving existing products or processes, writing new product specifications, meeting regulatory and food safety requirements, are included. Must have strong scientific knowledge of food processing; knowledge of microbiology or fermentation is a strong plus. 

Duties include working with operations, sales, purchasing departments; coordinating with suppliers of ingredients, working with potential co-packers, and on-floor management of processes. The person will be organized, detail-oriented and able to meet deadlines.

Qualifications: B.S in Food Science or closely related field with at least 6 years’ experience, with at least 3 years of experience in a food manufacturing company. Preference for someone with experience in fermentation methods and processes. Demonstrated experience in product development and formulation from concept to completion. Working knowledge of the Code of Federal Regulations, experience with food safety, HACCP and quality regulations/programs is a plus. Prior professional experience supporting the development of vegan cheese and or other vegan product is a plus. Ability to lift up to 25 pounds and be on your feet.

Production Associates

We’re looking for passionate team members to help us make amazing vegan cheese and to create a rewarding workplace. Production Associates are responsible for preparing and making high quality, tasty products. They are the foundation of our brand and are passionate about what they do in the Kitchen!

Essential Job Functions:

  • Maintain work area, equipment, and personal sanitation.
  • Operate milling machine
  •  Form/fill cheese
  • Handle and treat cheese in various modes of treatment as prescribed
  • Work within a team to meet production goals
  • Weigh ingredients and document lot codes on make sheets.
  • Handle and inspect/treat cheese as applicable.
  • Operate filler; load filler with product.
  • Maintain accurate production records.  
  • Prepare, weigh, carry, load, product according to established guidelines.  
  • Account and apply labels/stickers/ to applicable trays/tubs/ etc.

 Requirements:

  • Must be at least 18 years old.
  • High school diploma or GED equivalent, with basic math skills.
  • Kitchen/bakery, and food preparation experience highly desirable.
  • Valid food handler’s certificate preferred.
  • Punctual, reliable and consistent in attendance. This is critical!
  • Able to work flexible hours, weekends, overtime as needed.

 Packaging Associates

We’re looking for passionate team members to help us make amazing vegan cheese and to create a rewarding workplace. Packaging Associates label and put our finished products into boxes. They also help with maintaining accurate production records and ensure only top quality products are shipped out.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Maintain work area, equipment, and personal sanitation.
  • De-form product from moldings without compromising the integrity of product.
  • Effective and Efficient loading and receiving from Vacuum Pack Machine.
  • Maintain accurate production records i.e. counts of units boxed/cased/crated/etc.  
  • Inspect product making sure seal is intact and only top quality product goes out.
  • Identifies and sorts out rework; handles rework in a timely manner.
  • Account and apply labels/stickers/ to applicable units/crates etc.  

Requirements:

  • Must be at least 18 years old.
  • High school diploma or GED equivalent, with basic math skills.
  • Punctual, reliable and consistent in attendance. This is critical!

Cheesemakers

At Miyoko’s Kitchen, our mission is to make the very best artisan vegan cheese enveloped in a range of flavors and textures. Through our products, we hope to inspire people to see vegan cheese and ultimately a plant-based, whole foods diet in an entirely new way.

The cheesemaker we seek has experience in making traditional dairy cheese and is excited to apply his/her knowledge to non-dairy cheese making.

Responsibilities:

  • Make a variety of fresh and aged vegan cheeses while following strict procedures, and in accordance to our HACCP-based food safety program.
  • Work with Production Manager and Quality Manager in overseeing quality of products produced
  • Handle raw ingredients, ensure accurate weights and measurements in accordance to recipes, monitor and attend to cheeses during the cheese aging period.
  • Rotate refrigerated stocks, assist with inventory count of ingredients, supplies and packaging.
  • Assist with cleaning equipment and machinery after use

Requirements:

  • Must be at least 18 years old.
  • High school diploma or GED equivalent, with basic math skills.
  • 2 years cheesemaking experience in a commercial operation
  • Graduate of a cheesemaking course a plus
  • Knowledge of various cheesemaking techniques, cultures, enzymes, molds, aging, brining, etc.

Quality Control Technician

This position works under the direction of the QA and QC Managers, and assists the QC Manager with ensuring that the production facility and finished products meet food safety and quality standards. Candidate must be organized, detail oriented and excel at documentation.  Candidate must also be a team builder, with the ability to motivate and coach other staff members towards the compliance of quality standards.

The ideal candidate will have an immediate affinity with our aspiration to help people embrace a more humane and environmentally friendly lifestyle through their food choices. Candidates who are flexible and adaptable to a start-up work environment, have strong communication skills and connect through positive and respectful interactions, will be top on our list.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Complete Daily Opening Sanitation Checklist, and release production space to production team at start of day.
  • Perform quality checks on products and production equipment.
  • Collect and log samples for laboratory analysis.
  • Analyze samples of product: ph, organoleptic (texture/appearance/flavor), chemical composition, microbiological analysis, temperature
  • Record key checkpoint parameters during product processing.
  • Maintain and calibrate testing instruments.
  • Observe production processes and ensure compliance with GMPs and Food Safety Plan.
  • Perform routine checks of sanitation efficacy- allergenic residue and ATP swab checks, environmental monitoring swabs.
  • Take action according to Product Hold/Release Policy to mark, record and isolate any non-conforming product for review by management.
  • Perform monitoring and verification activities for Preventive Controls (Eg metal detector testing, weight checks).
  • Perform routine checks of packaging, labels and code dates to ensure accuracy and correctness during production.
  • Inspect incoming ingredients and materials for compliance to specification.
  • Routinely report observational trends in product and process to Quality Managers.
  • Assist with Research and Development batches at at production-level scale.

Skills and Qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Science in Food Science or related field (eg: Chemistry, Microbiology, Mycology, Toxicology) AND/OR
  • 2-3 years work experience in Food Manufacturing in a Production or Quality Assurance/Quality Control role.
  • Ability to read, write and interpret documents related to GMP compliance.
  • Able to stand for long periods of time, and be able to lift at least 25 pounds.
  • Willing to become an expert on GMP work processes and train team to standard procedures as necessary.
  • High attention to details; able to work quickly and accurately.
  • Be able to work flexible hours, weekends, and be willing to adapt to changes in orders and tasks.
  • Be reliable and dependable in attendance.
  • Multi task and manage multiple demands and priorities.
  • Bilingual in English and Spanish preferred.

Maintenance Technician

This position is full-time (40 hours/week), non-exempt and reports to the Maintenance Manager. This position performs routine equipment and facility repairs and servicing, while complying with regulatory requirements and company standards.

Essential Job Duties:

  •  Performs routine repairs and services equipment, and production facility.
  • Responds quickly to equipment failures, and minimizes production downtime resulting from mechanical reasons.
  • Conducts preventive maintenance inspections and procedures (eg lubricating, cleaning, adjusting)
  • Performs mechanical and electrical troubleshooting, has the ability to develop skills in these areas.
  • Ability to utilize a wide variety of hand and portable tools to perform assignments.
  • Assists in running services to new or relocated equipment.
  • Performs carpentry work as needed.
  • Ability and willingness to learn packaging equipment setup and changeover, including fine tuning and other necessary adjustment.
  • Comply with the rules and regulations set forth in Miyoko’s Kitchen’s employee handbook, safety manual and GMP guidelines.
  • Follows lockout/tag out safety procedures during service and repair. Implement such procedures if none exists.
  • Uses personal protective equipment as required.
  • Performs other tasks as assigned.
  • Ability and willingness to do overtime during peak season or based on company needs.

Requirements:

  • High school diploma or general education degree; or at least 1-2 years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Requires a well-rounded knowledge of the practices, tools equipment and materials used within the Maintenance Mechanic’s trade.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
  • Ability to speak effectively before groups (eg employees).
  • Ability to calculate figures and amounts, basic math skills, basic algebra and geometry.
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram or schedule form.

Physical Demands:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, feel; reach with hands and arms; talk or hear and taste or smell. Must be able to stand for periods of time, or walk, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. Must be frequently able to lift or move up to 10 pounds, and occasionally lift or move up to 100 lbs. Specific vision abilities include close vision, distance vision, color vision and depth perception.

Work Environment:

While performing the duties for this job, the employee is regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts, and may be frequently exposed to risk of electrical shock and vibration. The employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions; high precarious places, fumes or airborne particles; inclement weather conditions, and loud noise levels in the work environment.

Sanitation Associates

We are currently looking for responsible and reliable individuals to maintain our production facility. Candidates will be working as part of a team, and assisting in the sanitation process while adhering to quality, safety and sanitation regulations. Candidates must be able to work in the evenings and on weekends.

Part time and full time positions are available.

Essential Job Duties:

  • Duties include but not limited to vacuuming, emptying trash, sweeping, mopping, cleaning restrooms, lifting boxes.
  • Perform standard cleaning procedures on food processing equipment and utensils.
  • Maintain the interior of the building according to standards for food manufacturing.
  • Comfortable taking instructions from others and working in a team whenever needed.
  • Follow safety rules and use safety precautions as necessary.
  • Work independently and with minimum supervision.

Skills/Qualifications:

  • Must be at least 18 years old.
  • Prefer applicants already residing in the SF bay area- Marin, Sonoma preferred.
  • High school diploma or GED equivalent. Must be able to understand and communicate in English so as to follow instructions and learn various sanitization methods or the proper use of chemicals for cleaning.
