Plant Controller/Cost Accountant

We are a fast growing manufacturer of alternative dairy products currently located in Fairfax and will soon be opening a new manufacturing plant in Petaluma. The primary duties for this position involve plant cost accounting and expense control, secondary responsibility will be monthly financial reporting and to oversee the staff accountant who is responsible for Accounts Payable and Accounts Receivable. The position reports to the CFO.

Essential Job Functions:

  • MUST HAVE – Manufacturing background.
  • Prepare, maintain and analyze product standard costs.
  • Oversee and reconcile inventory cycle counts and annual physical inventory.
  • Assist in preparation of capital appropriations requests.
  • Track/review cost reduction projects and maintain required reporting.
  • Identify issues and proactively initiate analysis (labor, material usage, spending, etc.).
  • Cost reduction monitoring, reporting, and results auditing (where applicable).
  • Prepare and coordinate the annual budget.
  • Oversee the monthly closing process.
  • Monitor and analyze monthly operating results against budget and prior year.
  • Responsible for the daily operations of the accounting/finance function.
  • Prepare special projects and financial analysis for discussions with management concerning product investment and/or pricing decisions.
  • Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal reporting requirements.
  • Assist with financial audits as needed and provide recommendations for procedural improvements and control deficiencies.
  • Other duties as assigned by CFO.

Essential Skills and Knowledge:

  • Bachelor degree in Accounting or Finance, CPA, CMA, or MBA preferable or equivalent, complementary work experience.
  • Minimum 5 years of progressive cost accounting and analysis experience with a manufacturing organization. A strong emphasis should be put on knowledge of management accounting, cost and inventory accounting, and GAAP.
  • Strong analytical skills are required to quickly grasp issues impacting the plant’s financial results.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills are required.
  • Ability to manage projects, work independently, and communicate effectively to all areas and levels of the location.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to build relationships across plant and functional.
  • Must have a broad enough understanding of the business to be credible, make impactful changes, and support other projects that impact areas outside of accounting and reporting.
  • Focus on continuous improvement and the elimination of non-valued activities.
  • Experience in ERP reporting systems.
  • Knowledge of federal and state financial regulations.
  • Ability to analyze financial data and prepare financial reports, statements and projections.
  • Working knowledge of short and long term budgeting and forecasting, rolling budgets, and product-line profitability analysis.
  • Strong MS Office skill set, especially Excel

Food Scientist

This full-time position works under the direction of the R&D Director.

Essential responsibility is to work with cross functional teams in the development of new product formulations and/or reformulation of existing products; product stabilization and training staff to identify commercialized-ready products.

Qualifications: B.S in Food Science or closely related field with at least 6 years’ experience. Preference for someone with experience in fermentation methods and processes. Demonstrated experience in product development and formulation from concept to completion. Working knowledge of the Code of Federal Regulations, experience with food safety, HACCP and quality regulations/programs is a plus. Prior professional experience supporting the development of vegan cheese and or other vegan product is a plus. Ability to lift up to 25 pounds and be on your feet.

Production Associates

We’re looking for passionate team members to help us make amazing vegan cheese and to create a rewarding workplace. Production Associates are responsible for preparing and making high quality, tasty products. They are the foundation of our brand and are passionate about what they do in the Kitchen!

Essential Job Functions:

  • Maintain work area, equipment, and personal sanitation.

We’re looking for passionate team members to help us make amazing vegan cheese and to create a rewarding workplace. Packaging Associates label and put our finished products into boxes. They also help with maintaining accurate production records and ensure only top quality products are shipped out.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Maintain work area, equipment, and personal sanitation.
  • De-form product from moldings without compromising the integrity of product.
  • Effective and Efficient loading and receiving from Vacuum Pack Machine.
  • Maintain accurate production records i.e. counts of units boxed/cased/crated/etc.  
  • Inspect product making sure seal is intact and only top quality product goes out.
  • Identifies and sorts out rework; handles rework in a timely manner.
  • Account and apply labels/stickers/ to applicable units/crates etc.

Cheesemakers

At Miyoko’s Kitchen, our mission is to make the very best artisan vegan cheese enveloped in a range of flavors and textures. Through our products, we hope to inspire people to see vegan cheese and ultimately a plant-based, whole foods diet in an entirely new way.

The cheesemaker we seek has experience in making traditional dairy cheese and is excited to apply his/her knowledge to non-dairy cheese making.

Responsibilities:

  • Make a variety of fresh and aged vegan cheeses while following strict procedures, and in accordance to our HACCP-based food safety program.
  • Work with Production Manager and Quality Manager in overseeing quality of products produced
  • Handle raw ingredients, ensure accurate weights and measurements in accordance to recipes, monitor and attend to cheeses during the cheese aging period.
  • Rotate refrigerated stocks, assist with inventory count of ingredients, supplies and packaging.
  • Assist with cleaning equipment and machinery after use

Requirements:

  • Must be at least 18 years old.
  • High school diploma or GED equivalent, with basic math skills.
  • 2 years cheesemaking experience in a commercial operation
  • Graduate of a cheesemaking course a plus
  • Knowledge of various cheesemaking techniques, cultures, enzymes, molds, aging, brining, etc.

Quality Control Technician

This position works under the direction of the Quality Control Manager, and assists the QC Manager with ensuring that the production facility and finished products meet regulated sanitation and quality standards. You must be organized, detail oriented with excellent follow-through. You must also be a team builder, with the ability to motivate and coach other staff members towards the compliance of quality standards.

Shift hours for this position are Mondays to Fridays, approximately 12.45pm to 9.15pm.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Complete Daily Opening Sanitation Checklist), and release production space to production team at start of day.
  • Take and record pH.  Compile pH data and analyze trends.
  • Care for, clean, calibrate and record pH meter.
  • Take and record storage temperatures.  **Compile temperature data and analyze trends.
  • Care for, clean, record and calibrate thermometers.
  • Take and record water activity measurements:
  • Compile water activity data and analyze trends.
  • Care for, clean, record and calibrate water activity meter.
  • Perform detergent and sanitizer concentration checks, and record results in Sanitizer Concentration Log.
  • Conduct regular environmental swab sampling to test for pathogen presence, and record results, analyze trends.
  • Conduct regular ATP sampling to validate sanitation procedures, record results, analyze trends.
  • Assist in identifying and responding to incidents that require corrective action.  (E.g., glass breakage; identifying and segregating product adulterated by physical hazards; contamination due to improper handwashing/glove use; allergen cross-contact.)
  • Manage storage of retains.
  • Conduct and record results of retains testing/tasting.  **Compile SKU results and analyze trends.
  • Monitor in-progress product regarding organoleptic characteristics:
    • Taste,
    • Color and visual appearance, and
    • Texture/firmness.

Skills and Qualifications:

  •  Ability to read, write and interpret documents related to GMP compliance.
  • Minimum GED or its equivalent.
  • Previous work experience in a food manufacturing environment preferred. Able to stand for long periods of time, and be able to lift at least 25 pounds.
  • Willing to become an expert on GMP work processes and train team to standard procedures as necessary.
  • High attention to details; able to work quickly and accurately.
  • Be able to work flexible hours and be willing to adapt to changes in orders and tasks.

Inventory & Purchasing Associate

This position reports to the Production Manager and works under the direction of the Production Manager and/or the Production Supervisor. This position is primarily responsible for replenishing and maintaining the inventory levels of all items required by the production department to ensure no delays in production.

It also is responsible for replenishing other items needed by different departments other than production. The position also requires the maintenance and updating of production records including item builds and inventory reconciliation.

This role also receives directions from the CFO and CEO regarding purchases particularly with regards to equipment purchase.

Essential Job Functions:

Inventory Management and Purchasing

  • Manage and control inventory levels of all items used in production, including but not limited to all ingredients, packaging, labels and supplies. Monitor inventory and place orders to maintain par levels and to ensure no production delays. Monitor production schedule and lead times and assure that there is always at least one week of safety stock in place.
  • Generate purchase orders upon request of other departments again assuring that there are no delays in meeting customer orders due to shortages of items (for instance boxes for shipping).
  • Ensure all purchase orders are approved and purchases made in a timely manner. Reconcile purchases (e.g. submit receiving documents after purchases have been reconciled. Immediately notify appropriate individual of any changes to purchase orders received from vendor.
  • Ensure lot codes (internal and external codes) of all ingredients are accurately recorded in a timely manner.
  • Return orders as needed, ensure returns move through the process in a timely manner and follow-through to ensure credit is returned from orders.
  • Update and maintain production Make Sheets in the database, build items and provide weekly production reports (discards, milling, packaging).
  • Ensure replacement parts for equipment are ordered in a timely manner and there are adequate replacement parts on hand. Schedule repairs/replacement installation with external technicians/vendors.

Transportation coordination

  • Arrange and coordinate freight transportation of key ingredients with external sellers. Resolve issues when they arise and communicate delivery/pick up times with appropriate departments as necessary.
  • Arrange and coordinate transportation of products to external buyers.

Skills and Qualities:

  •  High school diploma. Associate’s degree preferred.
  • Prior experience with data entry, purchasing and inventory maintenance in an office setting.
  • Computer literate- proficient in MS Office: Word, Excel, Access; knowledge of Rapid Inventory a plus.
  • Must be organized, strong attention to details, able to multi-task and juggle between competing priorities. Follow-up skills are vital to this position.
  • Strong administrative and communication skills.
  • Able to work independently, self-driven; also able to work well across departments.
  • Must enjoy a fast paced environment, able to adapt to changes readily.
  • Must be punctual and regular in attendance, and have a positive, can-do attitude. Sense of humor will be a bonus!

Maintenance Technician

This position is full-time (40 hours/week), non-exempt and reports to the COO. This position performs routine equipment and facility repairs and servicing, while complying with regulatory requirements and company standards.

Essential Job Duties:

  •  Performs routine repairs and services equipment, and production facility.
  • Responds quickly to equipment failures, and minimizes production downtime resulting from mechanical reasons.
  • Conducts preventive maintenance inspections and procedures (eg lubricating, cleaning, adjusting)
  • Performs mechanical and electrical troubleshooting, has the ability to develop skills in these areas.
  • Ability to utilize a wide variety of hand and portable tools to perform assignments.
  • Assists in running services to new or relocated equipment.
  • Performs carpentry work as needed.
  • Ability and willingness to learn packaging equipment setup and changeover, including fine tuning and other necessary adjustment.
  • Comply with the rules and regulations set forth in Miyoko’s Kitchen’s employee handbook, safety manual and GMP guidelines.
  • Follows lockout/tag out safety procedures during service and repair. Implement such procedures if none exists.
  • Uses personal protective equipment as required.
  • Performs other tasks as assigned.
  • Ability and willingness to do overtime during peak season or based on company needs.

Requirements:

  • High school diploma or general education degree; or at least 1-2 years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Requires a well-rounded knowledge of the practices, tools equipment and materials used within the Maintenance Mechanic’s trade.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
  • Ability to speak effectively before groups (eg employees).
  • Ability to calculate figures and amounts, basic math skills, basic algebra and geometry.
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram or schedule form.

Physical Demands:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, feel; reach with hands and arms; talk or hear and taste or smell. Must be able to stand for periods of time, or walk, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. Must be frequently able to lift or move up to 10 pounds, and occasionally lift or move up to 100 lbs. Specific vision abilities include close vision, distance vision, color vision and depth perception.

Work Environment:

Sanitation Associates

We are currently looking for responsible and reliable individuals to maintain our production facility. Candidates will be working as part of a team, and assisting in the sanitation process while adhering to quality, safety and sanitation regulations. Candidates must be able to work in the evenings and on weekends.

Part time and full time positions are available.

Essential Job Duties:

  • Duties include but not limited to vacuuming, emptying trash, sweeping, mopping, cleaning restrooms, lifting boxes.
  • Perform standard cleaning procedures on food processing equipment and utensils.
  • Maintain the interior of the building according to standards for food manufacturing.
  • Comfortable taking instructions from others and working in a team whenever needed.
  • Follow safety rules and use safety precautions as necessary.
  • Work independently and with minimum supervision.

Skills/Qualifications:

  • Must be at least 18 years old.
  • Prefer applicants already residing in the SF bay area- Marin, Sonoma preferred.
